Lateral Thinking Questions

ANSWER: L.T.Q. #10

Date: Tuesday, August 22, 1995 2:51PM
All the non-junk from my old desk is still packed in the moving boxes, where it will stay until
someone finds a permanent home for me. Because of this, the cards with the Lateral Thinking questions
are still boxed away. If I get a chance to dig for them, I'll send out another question. In the meantime,
here are some outstanding answers*.
Here is this week's question:
It was in a major league baseball game that a pitcher faced only 27 batters. Every batter he faced, he
struck out. He allowed no hits and no runs. His team lost 4 - 0. How could this be possible?
ANSWER:
This was a Home game, and the first pitcher was a no-good bum, who let four runs score
without getting a single out! The manager, disgusted by this performance, called in our hero, the
Relief Pitcher, who proceeded to pitch a perfect game for the remainder. (If it were an Away
game, the home team, leading 4-0, would not have batted the bottom of the ninth, and therefore, the
pitcher would have only faced 24 batters.)
* NOTE: Because the actual answer cards are still packed away, I'm giving you these answers
from my memory. E&OE. So there.
